Post-Katrina flood pictures

Front of the house

I think the house and I feel about the same right now. We don't look that bad, but we're pretty unstable.

Flooding went just a few inches into the main floor of the house. All of the mechanical systems and the wood pier/beam foundation were submerged for about two weeks. Mold is gradually working its way up the walls. In the kitchen where the plaster is off, we can see the mold moving up the studs above where the water was.

Given our daughter's respiratory and immune problems, I'm don't think we will ever feel safe living in the house. I also don't think it makes sense to invest massive repairs on a house with obvious foundation failure. Our hope is that the insurance company will condemn it based on the structural damage so we can tear it down and rebuild. If not, we'll fix it to the extent that insurance will allow and sell it off.

It's so sad, what a charming home it was. I do hope that you are treatly fairly and justly by your insurance company. I would be concerned about the mold as well. I can't imagine what you are going through, I know how angry I was when we had a sewer back up in our condo complex and all of the wood flooring I'd just finished installing had to be gutted. I hope you were able to save photos and mementos. Take care, Kim

I am sorry to see the level of damage. I hope you are able to take some of what you love about the house out of it and pay tribute to it in your new home in the future.

You are in our thoughts and prayers. Thanks for posting and letting us all know how you are doing.

i'm so sorry to see the damage to your home. i am not an expert but MOLD is very dangerous, especially to children. check out a book by Doris Rapp, "Is this my child"she is an environmentel doctor with many warnings about mold. if you have a choice......fix and sell but try not to bring your daughter into that enviroment. i've read your other blog for a while and just checked our your complete profile and found "screw holland", you have a lot on your plate, i wish you the best and my thoughts are with you.
